Montclair, N. band Pinegrove's debut LP Cardinal recalls some of the most consistently likeable rock bands of the past 20 years in their most easygoing phases: Theres the rootsy shamble of early Wilco, the wiggly guitar solos and general guilelessness of pre-prog Built to Spill. But beneath the amiable surface is an intense work about one of the most important things imaginable: how to make our friendships really matter. band Pinegrove's debut LP Cardinal doesnt initially come off like a hefty work. Released February 12, 2016. Cardinal Tracklist. Old Friends Lyrics. Cardinal is a lot about correspondence and travel - the image is a very abstracted geometrical bird its also a letter leaving my mailbox and traveling to the west coast. In an interview in Allston Pudding, Evan described the writing process and some themes of the album. Much of Cardinal was written when we went on our first full US tour three summers ago with Tawny Peaks. There was a lot of traveling, a lot of friends I had met and wanted to keep in touch with but were across the country, so a lot of it is about correspondence, placement, and displacement. Does it have any direction Watch our review to find out. An earthy Americana patina colors Pinegrove's brand of indie rock that at times resembles shambling heartland rock with occasional shades of emo catharsis spiking out of the mix now and again. At first blush, the roomy guitar chugs and affable melody of album-opener Old Friends might feel a little unremarkable, but as Hall's banner of wounded introspection unfurls, you realize he's hitting all the right spots. Pinegrove - Cardinal review: Early stumbles. The Pinegrove sound has been overhyped and oversold as some genius bastard child of alternative, indie, folk, country, and a few other choice genres. Truthfully, though, Pinegrove aren't doing anything all that remarkably different from their contemporaries and forebears. If you've ever listened to American Football, You Blew It, or even 90 of mainstream radio music between the years of 2011 and 2015, then you will be comforted to know that most of what you hear on Cardinal will not sound all that foreign, nor very innovative
