On Kawara One Million Years Future. On Kawaras One Million Years was specially selected for the In Situ from Outside exhibition. The set of two books include the first volume, Past For all those who have lived and died, starts in 998031 BC and ends in 1969 AD, namely One Million Years the request of the artist, portions of the books have been read aloud in locations around the world including for this exhibition in Bangkok. Right now at David Zwirner Gallery, you can dip into one of the weirder artistic rivers of the last 40 years and behold-or participate in-On Kawaras mad epic sculptureperformance One Million Years. The Japanese-born, New Yorkbased artists rarely seen work is centered around a desk and two chairs in a windowed booth at the center of the otherwise almost empty Zwirner gallery. During business hours, two volunteers sit inside the room. One man and one woman. Visitors could hear One Million Years being read, while viewing One Million Years and a group of date paintings. Kawara's first exhibitions include the first Nippon Exhibition, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, in 1953, and at the Takemiya and Hibiya galleries the following year. His work was exhibited at New York's Dwan Gallery in 1967, and his one-person exhibition One Million Years was shown in Düsseldorf, Paris, and Milan in 1971. On Kawaras One Million Years is an ongoing epic work conceived by the artist in 1969, documenting the passage of chronological time. This 20-volume work is a typewritten record of one million years Past and Future. Biblical in scale, each volume contains 2,068 pages. Past is dedicated to all those who have lived and died and Future is for the last one. The first reading of One Million Years took place in 1993 at Dia Center for the Arts in New York. Since then live readings have been performed across the world, with a man and a woman alternating the reading of Past and Future dates toget. The One Million Years project moves away from Kawaras focus on the everyday to bring us into contact with time on a vast, nonhistorical scale. One Million Years is a set of 24 works, 12 spanning past millennia and 12 spanning future ones. On Kawara born January 2, 1933 is a Japanese conceptual artist living in New York City since 1965. He has shown in many solo and group exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale in 1976. After graduating from Kariya High School in 1951, Kawara moved to Tokyo. Kawara went to Mexico in 1959 and travelled through Europe, then settled in 1965 in New York City, where he has been an intermittent resident ever since. On Kawara. One Million Years, 1993.
